Digital Media Mentoring Program

Video & Podcast & Storytelling

EU in a Nutshell

Our project, “EU in a Nutshell,” offers a comprehensive digital media mentoring program for young adults with migration background in Germany and Belgium, as well as members of the host societies. The program has two main components: first, participants develop digital media literacy skills; second, they learn to implement these skills through practical exercises, reinforcing democratic values in their daily lives.

The project aims to empower young people’s active participation using digital and media literacy tools, support the integration of young newcomers into Europe, raise awareness of democratic mechanisms and European institutions, encourage engagement in democratic processes, and promote intercultural understanding, inclusion, and collaboration.

Media & Democracry

The “Media & Democracy” Mentoring Program is designed to empower young adults—both newcomers and local youth in Germany and Belgium—with essential digital media literacy and skills that foster democratic engagement and integration. Through a comprehensive curriculum, participants not only explore the connection between media and democracy but also develop the skills necessary to actively participate in democratic processes, bridging cultural divides and strengthening social cohesion.

In this program, participants will gain awareness and learn their understanding of how media shapes democratic societies and learn to express their ideas in impactful ways. By learning storytelling techniques, participants can convey their messages compellingly, while content creation, video editing, and sound design modules provide hands-on experience with media production tools. These skills enable participants to create persuasive content that amplifies their voices on critical social and political issues.

As part of the “EU in a Nutshell” project, this mentoring program focuses on two core goals: developing media literacy skills and reinforcing democratic values through practical exercises. Participants are encouraged to use their digital skills to connect with others, engage in democratic initiatives, and strengthen their communities by raising awareness of European institutions and democratic mechanisms. The program also supports the integration of young newcomers by promoting intercultural understanding, social inclusion, and collaborative learning experiences with peers from diverse backgrounds.

Ultimately, the “Media & Democracy” Mentoring Program seeks to foster a sense of belonging and shared responsibility among young people. By empowering them to use media and digital tools effectively, we aim to cultivate a new generation of active, informed, and inclusive citizens, equipped to contribute to a vibrant, democratic Europe.

Project Outcomes/Results

The project will produce multiple outcomes aimed at fostering digital and civic engagement. A Co-Creation Workshop will kick off the program, enabling participants and mentors to collaboratively design a tailored mentoring experience that promotes intercultural understanding. The Tailored Mentoring Program will provide both online and onsite sessions for 21 young newcomers. Visits to EU Institutions in Brussels and Regional Media Institutions in Germany and Belgium will offer hands-on insights into European governance and media practices. A Communication Campaign will share the project’s impact through online and offline channels, while the Final Event in Germany will allow participants to present their achievements. Additionally, Content Creation by both the project and mentees will highlight participants' experiences through articles, podcasts, and videos.

Target Groups

The program is intended for Young People aged 18 and above, especially those with migration backgrounds, who will benefit from digital media literacy training and mentoring. Practitioners such as mentors, trainers, and community leaders in youth development and digital literacy will contribute their expertise to the program. The program’s Geographic Focus includes participants from Germany and Belgium, fostering cross-cultural exchange.

Key Focus Areas

Key focus areas include the Digital Media Landscape to understand its influence on society, Critical Thinking and Media Literacy for assessing content accuracy and bias, and Mis/Disinformation for recognizing and countering misinformation. Healthy Use of Social Media will promote digital well-being, and Democratic Engagement & SDG 17 will encourage civic participation through digital tools. In Content Creation, participants will develop storytelling skills through blogs, videos, and podcasts.

Mentoring Concept

The Group Mentoring Framework will engage participants in groups of 7-10, fostering peer learning with two groups in Germany and one in Belgium, each guided by a mentor.
